On this CD from a Swedish label distributed by Universal, guitarist Andreas Pettersson interprets the songs of the late great baritonist Lars Gullin. "Danny's Dream," Gullin's best-known tune, is part of a medley that becomes the 5/4 "Gamble Valu." Some of the other songs should be revived on a larger scale. Throughout the date, although Pettersson brings back the spirit of the vintage material, he and his quartet play in their own modern hard bop/post-bop style. Pettersson has an attractive cool tone that fits the music well and the rhythm section, which includes some fine modern solos from pianist Daniel Karlsson, is tight. Gullin on Guitar is worth searching for, even if the liner notes are in Swedish. ~ Scott Yanow
